Puppy Videos

December 29, 2010: It was time for me to learn how to be patient and wait for videos to upload (it only took 20 minutes - not bad)!!!! So here you go, my very first YouTube videos:

We set up a pen in our dining room area so the pups will get more interaction throughout the day. They are loving their new surroundings so far.

Pepa @ Three Weeks

December 26, 2010: Pepa (Light Blue Girl) is the sporty puppy of the litter (in my opinion) - she is smack dab in the middle for energy, she has a sporty black nose, she is medium boned and she is a pretty fun puppy so far! A few posts back I commented about how she loves having her tummy rubbed - nothing has changed. She plays very well with Maya.

Jolie @ Three Weeks

December 26, 2010: Jolie (Green Girl) is actually one of the quietest pups so far (remember, lots can change over the next few weeks). She is the largest of the litter and lets just say she LOVES her food. She has been nicknamed "Meaty" by one of our soon to be puppy owners. Jolie appears to be medium to heavy boned which is very much breed standard and one of my personal breeding goals.

Jolie is a mini Gracie. The first photo below reminds me exactly of Gracie!!!

Maya @ Three Weeks

December 26, 2010: Maya (Dark Blue Girl) is feisty and loud! I'm trying so hard not to label the puppies just yet but Maya has really taken the spot light. She is the instigator and gets all the others riled up in a full on wrestling match. Maya also makes herself known by squealing and squawking when things aren't going her way!

Lola @ Three Weeks

December 26, 2010: Lola (Pink Girl) is still the tiniest, sweetest and quietest of the litter. The important thing is that she doesn't give up - even though her sisters push their weight around, Lola is still able to sneak in for her feeding and keep up with the rest of the litter. Lola has a very brave temperament and doesn't seem phased by much. She is small but still medium boned for her overall size. Lola has the sweetest expression I have ever seen on a Toller puppy.

Dora @ Three Weeks

December 26, 2010: Dora (White Girl) with the teardrop marking which has shrunk to a tiny dot is very steady natured so far. I say 'so far' because their temperaments are still developing so I am careful not to label them just yet. Dora appears to be medium boned when compared to the rest of the litter and she has a nice broad muzzle.

Back Home

December 22, 2010: Not long ago we made the big move from the Yukon to Alberta. We're truly missing the mountains, lakes and rivers (although they would be frozen right now as it has been super cold up north!!!!). A recent email conversation with someone prompted me to share some older photos - Back Home:

Lake Bennett, Carcross Yukon - Christmas Day

Kusawa Lake, Yukon

Not too fond of feathers - Braeburn Trail, Yukon

2 Week Post

December 19, 2010: Pups were two weeks old yesterday. Lola (pink girl) is still the lightweight of the bunch and Maya (dark blue girl) is the heavyweight. All of their eyes are open now with Jolie being the straggler by having both eyes finally open at 13 days of age! Pepa (light blue girl) and Dora (white girl) are tied for the most personality and character so far.

Christmas themed pictures (some may be blurry due to mobile, energetic, adventurous puppies!). We have been taking their pictures in a box to keep track of how much they grow each week.

EDIT: Temporary names are names of Picasso's paintings.

Maya - Dark Blue Girl

Pepa - Light Blue Girl

Jolie - Green Girl

Dora - White Girl

And it seems I am missing a picture of Lola (Pink Girl) - to be added soon!

The most ridiculous sleeping Toller I have ever seen....

December 19, 2010: Dora (White Girl) is a character through and through! Here is a photo series of Dora sound asleep....In the most awkward sleeping position ever known....................

The most ridiculous sleeping Toller I have ever seen...

Ever watch someone fall asleep on an airplane?

Puppy Noses

December 19, 2010: What do you get when you combine a pink nosed Toller with a black nosed Toller? Three little puppies with pink noses and 2 little puppies with black noses. I know I'm not suppose to pick favorites but I really think the black nosed pups are the most photogenic.

And here are a few more pictures taken on this lovely snow filled winter day!

Quite comparable to a little piglet, wouldn't you say?

Breeding Ethics

December 19, 2010: For those who are interested in breeding ethics, I have written a short blurb. In order to breed any dog, the dogs must be Kennel Club registered, rigorous health testing must be performed first, temperaments must be evaluated, the dogs must meet the breed standards and the dam and stud dog must be carefully researched and selected.

I volunteered for the Humane Society Yukon for several years as a foster home, kennel attendant and director. Overpopulation and stray and homeless dogs are an extreme problem and an issue that shouldn't be taken lightly. I also feel strongly about the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever breed. Tollers are the perfect dog in my opinion and were developed right here in Canada. It is my hope that the breed is protected and improved upon which can only be done through an ethically sound breeding program.

The amount of work, time, energy and money poured into these dogs is phenomenal. I am afraid to actually calculate the time and money spent on puppy, obedience, agility and handling classes, health testing, show premiums, travel expenses and breeding expenses. But breeding a litter of puppies with the hopes of improving the breed standard is certainly rewarding. Although I have been involved in training and showing dogs for a long time, this is my first litter of puppies and I am very happy with the experience and the expected quality of this litter. Breeding dogs ethically is no easy task!!! I have great mentors within the breed who have helped and educated me along the way. Thank you all very very much!!!! :)

Puppy Inquiries

December 15, 2010: Thank you to everyone who has showed interest in this litter ----> From the 'Gracie Fans' to the puppy owners. We are still taking puppy inquiries but I will follow up on emails and phone calls this weekend.

This weekend I will also be posting kennel information and puppy specifics.

Saturday will mark the pups 2 weeks of age. There is a little sadness on my part as that means I only have 6-7 weeks left with them! It's amazing how easy it is to grow so attached to them even after such a short period of time.

1 Week Post

December 11, 2010: The past week has been amazing - heart-warming, educational and rewarding. There is a bit of a story (which I will share later) behind Gracie's past year which makes this whole experience even more worthwhile. There are also a ton of people to thank including multiple vets, dog breeders, family members and friends.

Green Girl - Jolie

December 11, 2010: Green Girl - Jolie (21 oz)

She's a TANK! Very active girl, eats well, sleeps well, pushes her weight around well! She's the stockiest of them all with a very broad frame and large head. I'm really excited to see how she grows up.
